RACE The reason for all of this

Trackside Pit lane The crowd Photo and video

I went back to the fence, this time with a camera

Two seconds of a race on a television started all of this when I was five. This is the part where I got to stand at the barrier myself, and the photos and video I came home with.

A red Ferrari Formula One car at speed along the barrier, shot through two layers of catch fencing, with sponsor boards and a marshal post running behind it.
The frame the whole thing started with · long lens, shutter slow enough to keep the barrier moving

Allegiance

I am rooting for 44

Lewis Hamilton · Scuderia Ferrari · Mercedes‑AMG Petronas

Hamilton in scarlet on a Sunday, and the eight years in silver before it. That is the whole allegiance, and it has not moved since I was five.

Not neutral · never has been

Frames

What I point the camera at

Four things, every weekend: the car at speed, the pit lane, the people watching, and one corner filmed long enough to compare laps.

Trackside · long lens, panning
A car at speed, shot at a shutter slow enough to keep the background moving. This is the frame the whole thing started with, and it is still the hardest one to get right.
Pit lane · available light
Crews working, tyres going in and out, the two minutes before a session where everybody is busy and nobody is performing.
Grandstand · the crowd, not the car
What a race looks like from the seat: people leaning forward at the same moment. The sound does not make it into a photograph, so this is the closest thing.
Video · one lap, one position
A clip from a single corner, cut long on purpose. Cars arriving and leaving at the same place, over and over, until the difference between two drivers is visible.
A papaya-orange McLaren Formula One car passing the barrier at speed, with spectators standing behind the fencing on the far side of the track and a marshal at his post.
Trackside · same stretch of barrier, a different car, and the fence gets into every frame
A Ferrari turning away into a corner, seen over the heads of a packed grandstand of spectators in caps, one of them holding up a Ferrari flag.
The crowd, not the car · shot from the seat, over the heads in front

Three frames up. The pit lane and the one-corner video go up as they come off the cards.

The drawings came first

I was drawing these cars long before I photographed one. Exteriors, interiors, and proportion studies sit on their own page.
